To date Dominican Republic is still my best "value" trip I have ever taken. For 1k each (taxes in) we got to stay at the Gran Bahia Principe in Punta Cana for 7 nights (4 star). The resort is massive and has three big pools, a very nice long beach and 5 a la carte restaurants (at least 5 that I knew of) The food was very good (not amazing, but very good) and the only down side was that the buffet restaurant did not have enough variety and did not switch up their menu enough (which really isn't the worst thing when the food is good). Dominican coffee actually rivals Portuguese coffee, which is saying a lot and the fact that you have a coffee maker in your suite makes mornings so much better. The service is impeccable and very friendly. We did have a small problem when coming back from the pool one day, we discovered there had been a bathroom that flooded on top of our suite and our room and things were drenched. Gross I know, but the staff had us in a new room within minutes, they gave us free laundry service and they allotted us an extra a la carte reservation. We thought that was more than enough to make up for everything and it was all done quickly and with apologies. For a 4 star that performs like a 5 star and charges like a 3 star, Gran Bahia Principe Punta Cana is a must see.
