If you haven't been to Portugal, consider it sometime. It is beautiful and somewhat affordable in comparison to other European trips. Great food, great people and great beaches.
Southern Portugal (the Algarve) is the hot spot in Portugal, but you do get the best of both worlds there. You can have the touristy night life type of time in places like Albufeira and Lagos (you can even catch real bull fighting) and then you can have the scenic relaxing time in places like Portimao and Alvor. All these cities are cab rides away from one another within the Algarve making it easy to do day trips. Trains and buses are also available.
A night's stay at a B&B will run you around 45 Euros and a good meal around 10 Euros. The food truly is amazing. Like I said, if you haven't been, consider it sometime, it is more than worth it.
I went back in 2007 and spent 7 days (mostly unplanned) in the southern, eastern and northern regions. I only saw Lisbon for about ten minutes after we landed, as a big city it didn't hold as much interest for me. I still think about the trip all the time. I loved it so much I have even thought of moving to Portugal. A girl can dream can't she?!
