I shouldn't be ashamed, really. Sure, it's a cartoony graphic novel series that most teens are reading. But the
Scott Pilgrim books by Bryan Lee O'Malley are on another level of awesome. Maybe I like the books because they're set in my home town, Toronto. Maybe I like the honest dialogue between winsome twenty-somethings. Either way, it resonates with me.
To sum up, Scott is a young guy in Toronto trying to keep his relationship going. But he has to battle his girlfriend's seven ex-boyfriends in individual duels, which sometimes involve superpowers and sometimes involve head-butts. Surrounding Scott are weird friends, stalkers, band mates and ex's with a penchant for naughtiness.
Sometimes, the plot is predictable and the scenes suddenly cut off without warning. But overall, O'Malley infuses his characters with a tragic hopefulness that bleeds out of every dialogue bubble. It's not infantile, but mature. And what Scott is going through with love and lust is timeless and relatable.
Right now, a Hollywood crew is working on a film version of Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Michael Cera is starring as Scott. Before the film is released, I recommend you read the Scott Pilgrim series. Never hurts to revel in a guilty pleasure on a summer night.
