Condé Nast/Wired Acquires Ars Technica

Tech fans everywhere have likely heard of, or often read, tech blog Ars Technica. According to Tech Crunch, Condé Nast (owners of Wired.com) has acquired the site.

No firm details on the price but TechCrunch sources say the sticker price was likely about $25 million (the same Condé Nast paid for Wired).

Congrats to Ars, as the site is home to a lot of great tech, business and Web news and this is only going to help it grow. The editorial range does overlap Wired's a bit, but the report says the overlap is not substantial so there should be a lot of value-added to both these properties.

No announcement as of yet from Ars Technica, but TechCrunch says one should be coming this week.

If you can't beat them buy them, that seems to be the policy. I hope Ars Technica are still be able to maintain their identity.

I don't think they would be dumb enough to kill their identity. Yes, they will be owned but usually execs are smart enough in cases like this not to totally change things.

They're after the ad revenue anyway, so if it is profitable I don't think they would change a whole lot.

Know what you mean, and I agree with Chris that they likely won't kill who they are. Ars is vastly different than Wired, both in tone and coverage. And Ars is almost completely devoid of photos and intriguing Web design, where Conde Nast can help them a lot.

This is big news, thanks for the heads up, Chris.

So looks like TechCrunch was right and they scooped everyone on this story. Ken Fisher posted an announcement today confirming the acquisition and breaks down why the company sold and why they won't change.

Again, congrats to Ars Technica and TechCrunch for the scoop.
