Canada's CTV launches citizen journalism website

Posted May 16, 2008 by  David Silverberg in Technology 7 comments
Guess who else is jumping on the citizen media bandwagon? Canada's CTV News has launched a new website to allow registered users to upload photographs and videos of breaking news. MyNews.ctv.ca writes on their site:
We are looking for the best in citizen journalism to enhance CTV's own newsgathering efforts.

So far, the site has 22 videos and photos, ranging from pics of a New Brunswick flooding to a vid of a helicopter crash in Cranbrook, B.C.

I wonder whether this will take, like CTV wants it to, a la CNN's iReport. But will Canadians prefer to cover ice floes and hockey brawls?

I'd be interested in hearing if other members of DJ see this as a CJ site, or a place to submit content.

There are so many news organizations going this way now, but from a contributor perspective do you guys see this as citizen journalism and interaction or do you see it as media taking your stuff and patting you on the head for 5-seconds?

I love that the MSM is getting closer with CJ because I think CJ has a lot of value to add, but I wanted to know what you guys think -- what type of citizen journalism do you prefer? Do you prefer the contribute and walk away stuff, or contribute and be part of something on an ongoing basis as a community?

The latter. Now excuse me while I walk away for a few minutes. :)

I usually scan two or three "hard copy" newspapers daily. And I see a lot of stuff not being talked about here. Attempts are made at times in the blogs, to address some of theses areas but, except in few cases, the response usually borders on nil to dismal.

I have to chuckle at David's question, "But will Canadians prefer to cover ice floes and hockey brawls?" As a proud Canadian, I can assure you the ice floes and hockey aren't the only things that concern us.

But this new 'initiative' of CTV concerns me because, like any other mainstream news media provider, their 'news' is massaged and produced ad infinitum before it every hits the airwaves, cyberspace, or any print media concerns that their parent company shares. They already rely on other primary reporters, blogs, and AP feeds so I fear that submissions from their CJ's will only provide more content for them to massage rather then providing what DJ does—news by the common person, reported by the common person, for the common person.

this was harder to answer than I thought, there are times when I'd prefer to post and move on but I like the idea of building community and believe that it is essential work.

There are many cases where I agree 100% but I have to give CTV credit for one thing here: They have a video on the site of a helicopter crash shot by someone and the voice in the background actually says the F-word and it was not removed or edited out. That surprised me a lot.
