Racism, Attacks Lead News Sites to Disable Story Comments
Now some news organizations are disabling the commenting function on some or all stories and other news content.

It's not a good thing but I can see how news sources would need to cover their backsides.
-
It doesn't leave a lot does it? No comment permitted on anything controversial. We'll always have gardening, recipes and the odd joke. Dullville anyone?

I'd even allow that puke, who just commented here,(#2) to continue to spew his puerile venom.
-
Gardening is not dull nor are recipes.
-
I see the rationale I find comments frequently deteriorate into meaningless and or viscous babble.

Agreed, but a message board without the cut and thrust of the whole range of topics would be like running a kitchen without garlic, onions, herbs and spices.

How true. And there are those that will milk intemperate comment for the titillation of the board, but casualties can, and do, result.

maybe, garlic and other spices can go bad or be over used and spoil the meal.

why are casualties needed?
-
Why, indeed! These altercations tend to be killers of dialogue and topics - something this board does not need, and cannot afford. You can have all the votes in the world but, lacking commentary, it's nothing.
When I sees an important topic like this, posted over four hours ago, and note the response, I see a site in its death throes.
-
One thing to note is blogs may not get the attention which they often deserve. They might get attention later when others see them.
I guess I can see the point in disabling the comment section on some articles. Some of the fighting in comments can break down to just fighting and name calling which usually keeps others from commenting.

This would be quite unfair to the topic's originator (assuming he/she was not one of the combatants) and unfair to others that had commented on the topic. In my opinion, intervention is quite in order and might best be contributed by bringing the thread back on topic. Why let sabotage succeed?
-
The comment section is a double edged sword. Great discourse, and great pain can come from those who participate. Those who choose to inflict great pain in the end will find themselves only a part of the problem and not of the solution. We all have been there and it s bound to happen from time to time as we are all human. It is unfortunate that it happens on a constant basis though...

You are definitely right Kool. Maybe someone needs to take a deep breath step back and bring it back to topic and ignore the fighters.
I have had four days of unpleasantness with the new service I signed up for that puts my TV, phone and internet service all in one package. I have a headache after today and am still ticked even though someone was finely sent out that knew what he was doing.
I have had men in my house from 5 to 6 or 7 hours for three days trying to get my desk top working. I guess right now I do not want any confrontations. I flipped my lid today on AT&T and that is it for a long time to come.
-
Oh I HATE dealing with cable and phone companies. Holding monopolies over territories and all. They are so sneaky with their contracts, worded just right to be able to hurt their customers. Gosh Cynthia I wish I was there to help you. Then I could have flipped my lid and you would have been spared. I used to work for Dish Network, and these kinds of things are a little easier for me to do now that I got to see the inner workings of these places.

I tried being patient but when the jerk told me I might have to pay for them to come out again that ended my patience and he could hardly get a word in. When he said I seemed frustrated I flipped again. I might have to pay for them to come out a third time cause they never got it working the first and second time? Yea right !!!!!!! They had a tech out within an hour who knew what he was doing and no charge.
But I am still ticked.

I don't see commentary as essential, important if relevant, otherwise a waste of space at best.

succeed at what?

I think "racism" may be an excuse for doing what some want to do after being got at by reps of certain lobby groups.
This is from a Globe and Mail editor:
"This would result in the paper only having comments open on stories that were so uninteresting or uncontroversial that no one would care about them," Ingram said. "This is a point I keep making when I have the same discussions here at the Globe about closing comments on stories. If we're not letting people comment about important (and controversial) issues, then why are we bothering?"
Before Ingram took his current job as communities editor, The Globe and Mail was more restrictive on the subject. Comments weren't allowed on stories about the Middle East, women and homosexuality. Now The Globe and Mail's strategy is to keep comments open until they start to turn negative. If they do, an editor posts a warning message stating that comments may be closed if readers don't behave. Only if that fails will comments be closed on a story.
A more mature approach, I feel.
-
Kool I am sure you have come across comments that are just plane hateful and have
no purpose except to demean and degrade someone.
-
the Globe's moderated approach is reasonable.

I note this most important story is inactive. Is the virus spreading? Has censorship raised its ugly head on DJ?

I have been gone all evening and the story has been inactivated. There had to be a problem with it and usually that happens if it wasn't a news story.

Much like other stories, in addition to the written submission, there was a newspaper article linked, also a video clip. There was ongoing, on-topic discussion and no valid reason, it would appear, to terminate a discussion on this testing on children.
Without explanation, this action was contemptuous of the author and those who had commented, in my opinion.

I can't say as I saw only one or two comments after mine and then I went out for the evening. From the DJ notices on comments that were in my in-box when I got home it looked as if some were questioning if it was a news story. It also appeared that someone said I was naive. Its all that can be seen is the first part of a comment.

This minor rudeness from the Great MC is still evident:
... chrissakes instead of writing uninformed rubbish. Then come back and tell us all what you two geniuses have found.

Shutting off further comment is one thing; to conceal the preceding discussion from all who may judge, takes on aspects of the kangaroo court.

Thank you, Bob Ewing, for many things.
