Delivering democracy - Western style

Didn't catch the name, but hearing a commentator yesterday, speaking of Western forces in Afghanistan "protecting the world's largest grow-op" (that must make lots of widows and orphans feel good) and then reading today of "Western intel death squads active around Afghanistan", is it a vain hope that citizen journalists initiate or join a discussion of these matters.?

What sort of a nation involves itself in this? There's a pervasive stench of hypocrisy.
