What's with this voting business, anyhow?
I don't fully understand its purpose. I notice topics are voted on sometimes without commentary. Isn't the number responding to a topic sufficient an indicator of whatever is being searched for? I don't include "viewing' even in that since too much would depend on the chosen title.

Hi Skeptikool,
The voting decides what news appears on the front page. By voting for an article, you are essentially saying you believe it's newsworthy or you liked it. The more votes an article gets the higher up on the front page it appears.
Comments are good indicators of discussion-worthy topics but not necessarily for sorting a front page out. You might get a popular story about Britney Spears that gets 300 comments but that doesn't mean those people commenting think it's newsworthy. They might be looking for more info, they might even just be commenting to say they think it's ridiculous she gets in the news so much.
By implementing voting, readers can choose what they want to promote or push to the front page. We have a voting tutorial here that has this basic info if you want to see more.
Cheers,
Chris

Um doesn't voting also decide how many pennies the author makes (if they are digital journalists) or does not make or has that changed?
And far as I understand it the author does not make any pennies on page views... or has that changed?
-
I don't think alot of the newbies know that is how the CJ's get paid either patxxo.
-
page views count as I have earned 1.35 so far this month and never posted an article yet. :-) (I'm rollin' in it...hahahaha)
-
I don't think so either, so I figured i'd add that to the above explanation.

Hummm I understood that was cause someone may have upvoted one of your older postes not on page views, though I may be wrong ...
-
Oops...you guys are right and thanks Pat for bringing up the earnings part. For some reason I am missing an entire paragraph in my post above so I must have pressed something to wipe it out before posting.
Votes are critical to a citizen journalist's earnings indeed.
-
Thanks for that info in response to the opening post, Chris.
As an outsider looking in, I hope DJers don't think me presumptuous but is this not an invitation to mutual back-scratch?:

I am sure it is in some cases but most of us vote good articles and not by who writes them. :)
We also wonder why someone leaves a postive comment and yet fails to vote the article up. I know I don't often leave comments but if I read an article that is well written and interesting I vote it up. Of course this is just my 2 cents.
-
Sometimes it is a mutual back-scratch and sometimes it isn't.
Sometimes If I don't have time to comment and an article is good I will just vote it up and hope to come back to it later.

Personally, I don't find it presumptuous at all. I do tend to upvote writers I've known for awhile more but that is mainly due to the fact that I have checked the box (subscribed) to follow what they write and now only have a limited amount of time that I get on DJ so their stories are what I catch up on first and then browse around a bit to see what else is new or interesting.
Also, honestly the pay versus time researching and putting a story together don't even compare, we're not talkin copy paste stories here (some do try that but they usually get noticed really quickly and don't usually last long on DJ)
As for myself I'm not a prolific writer, I tend to get sidetracked in my research sometimes, lol, I love to learn and DJ has been a great learning experience for me as I'm just an average everyday person who had never written before.
Soooo scratch away all... :-)

I have to agree with the commenters above skepti. In fact, this is one reason we don't fully reveal how our system works (we obviously don't want gaming). However, it always seems to balance itself out and we believe it's quite fair in rewarding writers. Obviously the more you contribute and the higher your stories rank the more you earn.
You've been on the site now for a few months -- do you have any desire or plans to take the plunge and go the citizen journalist route?

Come on in the waters fine ..lol

I have contacted skeptikool and asked him why doesn't he apply to be citizen journalist.
He did answer and gave a reason which I didn't think was that good of a one. LOL Just kidding you skept. :-)
-
patxxoo said that she is has subscribed to certain writers. Jaguar who used to be active here is subscribed to anything that I write, after all I am her mother. :-) LOL
I don't know where you can do that. I know how to have alerts to certain subjects but not writers.
I agree with pat that there are certain writers that have been here a long time who always write well and have interesting topics. Those I always try to up vote but I don't always leave a comment for various reasons.

Click on any writer and click on their "news" or "blog" tab. On the top of the list of news there is a box you can check to subscribe to that user.

Ooops! sorry ma Picasso just figured you knew about it already.

Actually when I clicked on your name pat and went to your news I saw it.
Back when Jaguar was here , maybe your first DJ sister, I was subscribed to her news.
I guess since she was the only one I was subscribed to I had forgotten about it.
Since there are so many new writers there are certain writers that I will subscribe to now. If I am not on much for a day or two I will miss some that I would ordinarily comment on or vote up.
There some of those now that I will just click on their names and vote their reports up and comment on some of them.
Hey pat but it is good information to have for others to see.

yeah i've missed bunches myself i've gotta do some catching up tonight, k ma i'll catch yah later, got quickie merchandising job to do so I gotta run for awhile. hugs

Hugs to you too.
I shouldn't be on right now either as I have a job at church to do. I need to leave here in about twenty minutes. :-(

Instead of thinking about it as a back scratch, think about it as networking. People you build a relationship with are more likely to read your stories and vote you up. Also, networking doesn't have to just be on Digital Journal. For instance my husband made an account initially to help me get my votes up and get noticed, then he started contributing. My mother gets on and upvotes my stories, but she also adds to the number of viewers for the entire website ( she does read the stories of others as well). This is making money for digital journal and other viewers by raising the pot.
I know it may seem like a waste of time, but the best way to get more upvotes is to upvote and comment on others articles. You make more money from members than from visitor upvotes as well. So start writing Skeptikool, it starts off slow at first but you make more money as you network, just like at any entry level job.
