Subhabrata urgent
Dear Friends,
I received this day from one of our members I started making friends with months ago. I have pictures of him and his family and have interacted with him a good bit. I know many of us had noticed his talent, and I put up a blog about that. He is now suffering a great deal, and I am spreading the word everywhere I write on every blog and with people everywhere. He is no solicitor and is the genuine article; his background and interactions and email reflects he is a fine person.
Anyone wanting to help, please note the blog address. I thought about doing this and then thought, were this me, I would want to know. We have people here who have cancer, are shut-ins and all, I happened to know some of them; and I think many of you know I am an advocate for people with disabilities.CarolOnce again I am off from DJ. On 3rd of this month I got hospitalized with severe pain in my abdomen. I was not at all prepared for this sudden shock. I got to know that I have got acute cholecystitis. I had to get a discharge from that hospital since I was unable to pay them anymore. But in this condition surgery is the only way out to save my life which I can not afford as I lost my job during recession. And if left untreated, it might lead me to death. I don't have any insurance as it is not mandatory in India and we need to pay upfront. Finding no other way, I planned to open a blog seeking help from my well wishers whoever knew me closely. Here is the url of that blog where I have uploaded all necessary details:
http://subho1.wordpress.com/2009/06/05/you-can-help-me-stay-alive/
Can you please do me a favor by helping me to spread this blog link? I hope God is there to help me before it is too late.

Wow, I thought it had health insurance, but I had received an email a couple weeks ago telling me he hadn't been posting because he was ill. David Silverberg might want to write at his Facebook email. I am concerned and am not giving the message out except to people here to see if anyone knows anything, that's why I copied it in its entirety. It sounded sincere given the message I had received about his health a couple weeks ago. Do you think there are now problems with the India health plan? I think we need to investigate this, at least the contacts DJ has we may not have. This is the email I had corresponded with him when I contacted him months ago to tell him how much I liked his material. So this could be a hoax--but I don't know.

The hospital listed is a private one which would charge but India has state run health care. They may not be the 'best' hospitals but he would get excellent care in them. Also the conditions are very rare in a 34 year-old unless he was an alcoholic. The writing style does not appear to be as fluid as the writer on DJ. Perhaps I am too skeptical but I think that there needs to be research into this matter.

I agree KJ. Most people here at DJ are a caring group but we need to know exactly what is going on.
-
That's strange. I am positive he was one of my friends on facebook. I just checked to see if he has said anything there and he isn't listed as one of my friends anymore.
-
Same here---and he hasn't posted for awhile. There is something wrong somewhere, if not his health something is going on. I need the help of others as right now I have some personal medical issues and am taking some strong meds for a couple weeks more and get tired from tired to time. I am hoping to keep my radio show, but it is getting tough because of the effect of the meds. But Subhabrata's plight seems serious, if it is true. I am going to dig some more as well, but we can all be sleuths together. If he is ill, I think we should collectively help with communication. If he is not, and someone is using his name, then we should do something.
Also I noticed also his writing was somewhat different, but I have noticed that his postings have sometimes not been as fluid either--and illness can cause thought process problems.
Any info anyone gets or can get, would be helpful. Again I am not sending this out for additional help quite yet, outside of our immediate group.

This was one of my early correspondences when we were just sending email back and forth. You can see that on informal email his language fluency is a little different than his formal writing, whichHi Carol, Congratulations for being one of the best contributors in DJ and also for your new role in radio station. And, another congratulation for becoming the DJ Ambassador. It was a great news you know. Unfortunately, I think here I won't be able to catch the frequency of the radio channel you are working now. I know you would do great. My wife says (and me too) your words are very sweet and strong as well. You might be very busy these days with your work. Wish you all the best.
P.S: I have attached the photographs of me and my wife, Jayati. That was in Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, India.

This is Jayati, Subhabrata's wife. Today I visited the comments regarding my husband's health and the doubtful expressions in the mind of people with whom he thought he had been working closely from months. I am already a victim of situation and after reading all the above comments I got shocked and shown to my husband the real face of people whom he had been trusting so long. I was bound to join this site in order to give proper reply to all the comments made about him.
@ KJ Mullins
Carol have you verified this more. India has state health care. Also the email address differs from the one on Facebook.
This comment itself is a hoax. Please get your facts right. Both e-mail address are the same and the facebook id is VERIFIED. The login id in DJ is subhabratadas.1975@gmail.com which differs from the e-mail id subhabrata.das1975@gmail.com from where he sent e-mail to Carol. Now the fact is "subhabratadas.1975@gmail.com" is a system error because all of the e-mails sent from DJ reach "subhabrata.das1975@gmail.com". Here is the proof:
image:52197:0::0

In the above screen shot you can find a few red circles. On left there are the names of two of my husband's favorite writers Carol and AJ Stuijt. And on top there is the proof of the true e-mail id of my husband and in the e-mail body there is another red circle which shows the user name sent by DJ.
Now during account creation DJ sent this user name to "subhabrata.das1975@gmail.com" and my husband is nor responsible for that, nor did he bother himself on this issue.
Here is another screen shot of an email from the Publisher of DigitalJournal.com and Executive Producer of Digital Journal TV Janusz, which also reached the same email address:

The hospital listed is a private one which would charge but India has state run health care. They may not be the 'best' hospitals but he would get excellent care in them
Neither you reside in India, nor have you ever taken this type of "excellent" treatment in any such health care center. If you have enough patience, take a look at some of such health care provisions which in your opinion are "excellent". Now, before getting drifted by some Indian government propaganda regarding it's health care, come to India, stay here, get admitted to some REAL FREE GOVT HOSPITAL, and get back to your home with a healthy body (if you can). Then put your comments about how excellent you feel about the state-run health care system in this country, specially in rural areas like Siliguri where I reside which some claims as a "GROWING TOWN".
Go through this page and you will find many evidences:
http://www.issuesinmedicalethics.org/161fp06.html
Besides, internet cannot serve the pictures of those state run excellent hospitals with dirty toilets, reuse of already-used and disposed syringe, contaminated blood transfusion, rats and
insect infected ICUs, dogs pulling and eating newborn babies and people dying without medication or wrong medicines.
Sitting in a cool and safe world it is not possible for you understand all these worst pictures unless you visit this place and face it all yourself. Although it doesn't matter anything to you if my husband dies, but I do care and I would never take the risk of dumping him in a garbage bin-like treatment center to end his life with their "EXCELLENT" TREATMENT.
The writing style does not appear to be as fluid as the writer on DJ
Well you might not be sensible enough to expect as fluent writing from a patient in his sickbed as he used to write in his normal days. Besides, his mother tongue is not English and an informal letter can not be as fluent as yours. In DJ whatever articles he wrote were in formal English. Being an English speaker can't I expect these minimum logical thinking from you? Oh and by the way, after getting such shocking comments from his co-workers, he is really not in condition now to write anymore neither in formal nor in informal fluency right now.
You might also find bunch of mistakes and wrong English in my comment as well with which you might question my genuine existence also. Go ahead if you don't even have the minimum understanding of some non-english speaker's style of writing.
Also the conditions are very rare in a 34 year-old unless he was an alcoholic
I never expected such a stupid comment from a knowledgeable writer (that's what my husband told about you) like you. Do some research before making silly comments. Believe it or not, my husband has never tasted even a drop of alcohol in his 34 year. Now read carefully and correct yourself on what cholecystitis is:
http://www.mamashealth.com/stomach/cholecy.asp
http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/c/cholecystitis/causes.htm
Cholecystitis is an infection usually generated from gall bladder stones which has nothing to do with alcohol consumption. Looks like your intention is to spoil his reputation somehow and that's why you don't even cared to collect proper information with patience. Looks like you are after spoiling his reputation and that's why you are spreading hoax about him in every possible way whatever you can.
@ Cynthia Trowbridge and Carol:
You are still there in my husband's friend list.
Today Cynthia sent one message from facebook to my husband which reached his
"subhabrata.das1975@gmail.com" e-mail address at 7:36am:

And I am going to answer it from facebook right before posting this comment.
My husband is perhaps is the most genuine person in this world and I trust him more than God himself no matter what you people think of him. My husband once told me that he works with some real sensible and educated people in Digital Journal. That's why he opened this blog during his bad time seeking some help from those people who used to write so many good comments in his articles without even knowing whether there is any real Subhabrata Das in this world! I am not surprised, I am not emotional. Because this is how real world is and people from all status and levels might think alike. Please don't bother to waste a single penny or a single word of sympathy for him till you are sure of his genuine existence. And for me he is like my baby, my everything and my world. And I won't let him die with or without anyone's help, care, concern and sympathy.
I am extremely thankful to Carol for her good intention and good heart. Thanks.

I am sorry that it upsets you that questions about the validity of an email. The email address on the blog at Wordpress is from yahoo.com and the one of Facebook is gmail. That is a legitimate difference. In the virtual world there are hoaxes all the time and people's identities are also stolen. As members of the site we do not have access to people's personal emails. All mail is sent via the site for our protection.
When researching the condition it said it is rare in people under the age of 50 unless alcohol is abused. The intent was not to taint his reputation. The intent was to verify that this is indeed the man who has been a respected writer for this site.

Wordpress and Facebook have different e-mail address. Because a person can have more than one e-mail address as you might know. My husband's g-mail id is for professional purpose and the yahoo id is the paypal id which is already written there. Now it is our decision for safety purpose not to use a paypal id as a professional id and vice versa. And to my knowledge, nobody uses paypal id for any general purpose.
I never heard of any relationship between alcoholism and cholecystitis. I already gave you the links. Can you please send me some valid link where it says that it is caused by alcohol abuse? I need to know why the links sent by me are wrong which never mentioned alcohol abuse? Besides my husband's sonogram plates are showing gall stones which any doctor can detect. If you think they are wrong then please let me know the valid source of information from where you judged his reports. And you are right where it says that it is rare under 50 years of age. But that doesn't mean it is impossible to happen at his age. Then what are those reports showing?
Yes I agree it is really hard to trust anyone at the age of internet and computers where there are many cases of frauds and impersonation. But you could verify it with him before posting those comments many of which I felt humiliating and derogatory for my husband's reputation. However, if all the confusions are clear by now then please let's end this matter here since I am too busy with my husband's health to reply here. God bless all of you.

In 90% of cases, acute cholecystitis is caused by gallstones in the gallbladder. Severe illness, alcohol abuse and, rarely, tumors of the gallbladder may also cause cholecystitis. Gallstones continue to form throughout adult life, and the prevalence is greatest at advanced age.
I do hope your husband gets better quickly. I have posted his blog on twitter and hopefully you can get some donations via that.
-
Also I forgot to mention something important. The paypal id "subhabrata_d@yahoo.com" mentioned in wordpress blog is a verified id. Which also proves the identity of Subhabrata Das and I think I don't need to come back again to prove his identity.
The entire blog had been created on human ground. Unfortunately things took a different shape and direction. I hope the misunderstanding won't escalate further. Thanks to everyone.
-
Jayati, I hope you receive the help you need for your husband. Carol takes to people who are very sweet and I am sure he is. I have not had the opportunity to really get to know him. God Bless.
-
Jayati I am sorry I should have corrected the comment I made that your husband is not on my friend's list. Unfortunately I just looked at the first page of friends and didn't click for the next page.
I pray that Subhabrata will get the help that is needed and will be well soon. My prayers are with him.
-
I am putting his information now as my main site from which all my articles will reference. In other words, we have a site here when we sign up that people can go to. There will be an ongoing message on a blog that will go to everyone. I am also sending an email to all my friends in my address book and asking them to forward to their friends. I have 1500 email addresses in my address book because of the small newspaper I write and the professional contacts and relationships from working with the newspaper and as an expert witness in Hawaii.
I will work on some other things as well to get this going.
Those who want to work with me on a concerted effort together to help our dear friend, would be welcomed. Please write to me on my DJ address, and I will then send each person who writes my newspaper address and personal one as well.
I also have a radio show and will seek help from my listeners in this area. Jayati Chakrabarti is right about her husband. I found him enormously sweet during our early interactions, and I would hope if we can help save his life, we will. We all have friends as well, and perhaps this is a time when we can tell the world it is a small one after all.
My friends call me naive at times, because I have been taken in a few times by people. But I have found most people are 98% honest about their health. Insurance companies did a study about workers compensation health, as an example, in the 1980's and found that whereas most people thought they were lying to get money, it turns out that verification with doctors and families found 98% were telling the truth and 2% were lying. After learning that, I have gone with the fact; I pass to others now so we know there may be scams, but they are usually part of rings of people dedicated to just that sort of thing.
I hope we can work individually and collectively to help this man.
-
Hi Carol..
Any news as yet?
Two things... I hope that he is ok, and that this is not a hoax... I get 10 emails a day in my spam box with tales of ill-health and requests for money but having said that... I remember reading some of his posts and thought he was quite eloquent and seemed a good chap.. I will therefore reserve judgement until we can verify.. Keep us posted..

I have emails from his wife and his email to me is exactly like some of his early articles in terms of tone and similar to early emails. This man is ill. People who want to may write to me at my DJ spot, and I will give them my email. I am sending money. The verification has been made. Anyone who doesn't believe this now, well I am too focused on helping right now to debate the whys and wherefores other than to say, his wife has contacted people; and I have pictures of both of them. She has sent printed evidence of the authenticity.
My point is that I would rather make a mistake helping someone who doesn't need something than make a mistake and not help when someone could be seriously hurt. Ordinarily we are solicited by strangers, but this man is no stranger; and it would be difficult for someone to write me personally, on my email, using his name and location exactly.
The family needs $600. I am on way to helping today.
-
I just sent him a donation...

Carol have you verified this more. India has state health care. Also the email address differs from the one on Facebook.
Just to set the record straight, India DOES NOT have "state health care."
-
I heard from his wife through facebook and I have also sent a gift to them. I pray that they will receive the amount they need to have the needed surgery.

I do too, Cynthia. She sent me a user contact and thanked me for my gift...I hope all goes well for him.
-
Typo. Technically, there IS a state health care, but it's SO poor that it's worth nothing, really.
-
I too sent a gift and received a thank you from the wife and also a phone number. They only need $600, which may be a pittance to some, but easy to raise. I have a number of emails over the months before, and the kind I just received is linguistically the same (I say this as a document examiner who had to examine things like that) There is always a chance of the negative, but I am certain enough in my own mind that what I am doing is right. Others can decide for themselves. I just gave an alert as I would for anyone who expresses a need, and especially for someone I had come to know at least in some way. Had this been from a stranger in some solicitation out of the blue as part of bulk mail, well--- I know the difference usually.
That's my take. I am sure each person can make a decision, and whatever decision is a personal one.
-
I just spoke with Subhabrata and his wife in India. He is weak and tired, and they are hanging on. I got them in the early a.m. because I wasn't aware of the immense time difference.
But the situation is quite real, and he needs help.

How are they doing with raising the money, Carol?
-
She is giving me a list in 48 hours, if not sooner. I told her to stay in contact with me regularly.
I have the phone number for those who know and want to speak with him. He would probably enjoy hearing from others.
I think letting this man know we care is important, whether there is money or not.
I also have physical addresses
-
New information from Subhabrata, after my telephone call with him and his wife:
Hello Carol,
It was so nice to hear your voice over phone last night. Don't ever feel embarrassed for calling us at an early hour. For a person like you we are always available. Subho was half asleep while talking with you and later he felt ashamed because he din't ask about your health. We received donation from another two people:
One is from ------- and the other one from ----------
I personally also managed to collect some amount from some of my friends in India which is worth almost $100.
I already sent you an account of the other gifts. So the total amount rises up to $227 including yours'.
Today I spent some amount from $100 donated by my friends in India to take him to the doctor. He suggested a number of medical tests depending on which we would be sure of his current physical condition. Then we would decide how early the surgery has to be done. Tomorrow morning we are going to a pathological clinic to do the tests. I would update you once I receive the reports.
Please take care of yourself.
Regards,
- Jayati
They are more $400 short for surgery. For those who inquired, that's the information.
-
Thanks, Carol for the update.
-
I answered your user contact before I read this Carol.
I am a little surprised that they still need that amount of money. If many would give just a small amount it shouldn't be a problem raising that amount of money.
I did send some money and received a user contact from Jayati.
If they don't receive the full amount that is needed does that mean he can't have the surgery?
-
They only need $600? I don't get paid again until the 15th and I'll discuss this with Tom. I am not sure what we can do but I will try. If nothing else he will have my prayers. When is the surgery supposed to be? Or can he not get it unless he pays up front?
I know this sounds cheesy but I am goin to go upvote all of his stuff. I have only voted for one or two. That is the best I can do right now
-
but I am goin to go upvote all of his stuff. I have only voted for one or two. That is the best I can do right now
Good idea Sam. Do all we can. I am right behind you.
-
Me too. I think some of them, however, are too late to be paid for. Is that true David? When are vote ups past the date to make a difference?
I sent more than a third of the amount raised, and our budget is tight because we both have medical problems. My concern is this man may die. India is a poor country, and $600 is a lot of money to them. I am putting up a message on my Facebook as well.
I think we all know now this is real.
-
A problem is even if we all vote up all his articles he has to have at least $10 and won't get it until the first of July.
Carol I am sending you an email as I need to ask you something privately.
