Hi all,
I'm at it again - sorry but after using the site for a couple of weeks now here are some of the things I think could be looked at and integrated into the site.
1. Vanity URLs - Facebooks getting them, many other sites already have them so why don't Digital Journal? It would be handy having users being able to have say brentoncurrie.digitaljournal.com or digitaljournal.com/brentoncurrie instead of digitaljournal.com/user/204311 and looks much nicer and formal on the press badges.
2. Have localised editors - OK I realise this is a US based site and all and you guys can't be up all night editing stories etc. but I really think that somehow there needs to be an editor from say the other side of the world (e.g. Australia or New Zealand) so that when its night in the US someone on the other side of the world can takeover during the day their time. Perhaps you could add in an extra level between employee and journalist for citizen editor?
3. The ability to live blog - Whether this be using a service such as CoverItLive.com we need to be able to live blog without having to edit the article each time - and by using a service such as coveritlive we can accept comments in real-time and users get latest information without having to reload the page. We can also then make polls etc. Could this be integrated with the embed video etc. option on the post news page?
4. Better analytics - This one isn't so high up on the priorities list, but I think we need to be able to see more information about what reach we are having (Similar to what AllVoices have) and show page views for blogs as well.
5. Coverage sections - This would take a while to setup and yes I know you can already sort of get a page which shows you all the articles on one topic, but for big events such as tech conferences, news events (i.e. on a world scale such as Swine Flu) we should have a page setup (accessible at say digitaljournal.com/swineflu) which would list all articles on the topic in a "pretty" layout (such as the ones that CNET uses). That way readers would have a comprehensive area to look at for all the latest on the event. Something to look at for the future maybe?
