They look like yellow rickshaws, but they're actually the new breed of eco-friendly vehicles. EcoCab, a pedal-powered taxi, will open for service in Toronto on May 1. The EcoCab runs on the pedal-power of a trained driver, and when required, uses a rechargeable electric battery. It can reach speeds of up to 12km per hour.
"Canadians - and Torontonians - are ready and open to making changes in their lives to benefit the environment," said William Kozma, president of GO Mobile Media, in a
statement. "EcoCab is easy and fun for commuters and provides an opportunity to help reduce our daily carbon footprint."
A fleet of 28 EcoCabs will be peppering downtown Toronto this summer, with plans to expand to cities such as Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary.
