Slander and Allegations

Just wondering.
We are constantly lectured by DJ staff, the legal profession and news media in general about protecting ourselves in the case of perpetrators (alleged, of course) of crimes and yet ...
Just tonight I read this headline: "Toronto Raptors' Chris Bosh is a 'deadbeat dad'".
Now, I am not sure about you, but my headlines are often changed by DJ staff and sometimes I don't really mind, sometimes I do mind but hey, what can I do. Also, I get e-mails reminding me to insert the word "alleged" when talking about a person who is suspected of doing something or has not be convicted by the criminal justice system.
So here we are, reading a headline that avers that Chris Bosh IS A 'deadbeat dad' when, after all, it is an allegation made by his ex-girlfriend in papers filed with the court.
What is the definition of a 'deadbeat dad'. It was my understanding that it meant that it was a father who did not support his offspring. Do we know if he currently pays child support? No. He says he does, she infers that he doesn't. Perhaps he doesn't pay child support at the amount she wants? Perhaps he does not pay child support at all? Until we know for sure, is this the correct headline for this story?
