Small cities face greater financial constraints than their larger counterparts but are seeking ways to use the same kind of analytics technology to manage urban operations, the Washington Post reports.
Roy Buol, mayor of Dubuque, Iowa, told the Post data management platforms have the potential to help citizens decide what they need and want through real-time information.
Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez petitioned for his city to join the IBM Smarter Cities program in an effort to pilot new technologies into the city's operations.
The city selected IBM to install technology intended to help police track and predict the likely locations of criminal activity, according to the report.
Marjorie Censer writes IBM and Siemens executives told her it is easier to find problems and change them in smaller cities.
Gimenez told the Post that his city likely has the same issues as a small town, even though the demographics are different.
