Yves Robichaud is originally from the small Acadian community of Grand-Barachois, New Brunswick, Canada. He has studied Business Administration and Information Technology, currently works for the federal government, and is the proud father of one son: Jeremy. Inspired by a love of fantastical, magical tales, Kaylen’s Rising is Yves’ first attempt to share this literary passion with his son and the rest of the world.
Could you please tell us a little about your book?
Kaylen's Rising is about a 14 year-old elf named Kaylen who lives in an underground city. Kaylen sees plenty of kids his age wielding weapons or learning magic, but he feels left out since his overly strict parents forbid him from using either. When he is finally allowed to attend school, his world is turned upside down as he discovers that his people are at war with the humans and that he has a very rare magical ability to summon skeletons. Things will never again be the same for Kaylen. He will need the help of his friends and to improve his magical powers if he is to survive what is to come.
Who is your biggest supporter? Your biggest critic?
My biggest supporter, and at the same time my biggest critic, is my 13 year-old son Jérémy. I've had this story in my head for the longest time, but it was my decision to share this story with him that finally motivated me to put it on paper. He was involved in the writing and editing processes, as I always kept him up to date with changes to the storyline as it progressed. Since kids don't have much of a filter, he wasn't shy about telling me what he didn't like. At the same time, his support made it easy for me to keep going. He was very proud of his dad when I presented Kaylen's Rising in front of his eight-grade classroom. The presentation went well and he was so excited once it was done that he gave me a high five!
What are you currently working on?
Kaylen's Rising is my first novel and I am still working very hard on the marketing and book sale aspects of being an author. As a self-published author, it's not always easy since you have to do everything yourself. Not only do you have to write a wonderful story, you have to put in time and energy to get your book out into the public eye. I've been doing presentations at local schools and having book-signing events. I'm also working on the sequel to Kaylen's Rising as I plan to make the series into a trilogy. I learned quite a bit writing my first novel and I believe that my writing will continue to improve.
Is there an author that inspired you to write?
I can honestly say that several authors have inspired me to write. I became an avid reader at a very young age, but without great books, this may never have happened. Some of my favorite authors at the time were Agatha Christie and Jules Vernes. I also enjoyed reading Dan Brown and John Grisham. Of course, the vivid imagination of JRR Tolkien and his ability to create such a detailed fantasy world contributed to my inspiration. Then there is the incredible story of JK Rowling and her Harry Potter series. I believe that her unlikely rise to fame motivated many people to become authors. Having said that, the author that provided me with the most inspiration was Rick Riordan. His casual yet incredibly entertaining style of writing made me realize that this is something that I could do.
What do you feel is your biggest strength? Biggest weakness?
As a person, some of my strengths are that I am creative and sensitive. This shows in my writing as I able to create original creatures, battles and scenes. My sensitivity helps me with the interpersonal relationships of the characters as well as dealing with the emotions. My biggest weakness as a person and an author are my lack of patience. This also shows in my writing as more detail and better pacing could be incorporated into the story. These are aspects of my writing that I have identified as weaknesses and that I will work diligently to improve.
What do you feel sets this book apart from others in the same genre?
There are a few things that make Kaylen's Rising unique. The first thing that comes to mind is Kaylen's ability to summon skeletons. When was the last time you heard of a hero that could summon skeletons? It's a pretty cool power to have! In Kaylen's Rising, the elves are the good guys and the humans are the bad guys. That's also a bit different. Finally, there is the vast, colorful world of Taria, which is unlike any other place.
