Spring may seem routine, but it is brief and a reminder that life goes on

It is easy to get caught up in the daily routine of life, not really recognizing much except that one day ends and another begins. Spring time is of course a time of renewal and of hope.
Weather in California is usually mild so the sharp contrast between winter and spring can easily be overlooked. Except for this reporter, I like to think that spring time in Wine Country is special because it is one of the few seasons where everything is in bloom and the sun shines brightest in the sky. The hills are green, trees have blossoms and wildflowers sprout up on just about every bit of open field or backyard.

The hills and mountains in Sonoma County are breathtaking, especially when traveling the highway from the town of Sonoma to Santa Rosa.
Yet this natural splendor does not last long. Soon the green will fade and all those flowers will wither. Blossoms are usually the first to flutter away. They crumble and fall and disappear as if the tree never had them at all.

I like to think that spring gives witness to the brief time we all have on this earth, even if one lives to be over 100. There are no solid guarantees. Each wonderful season, especially spring time is a gift to us all. And, it is one of those things that money is not able to buy. Certainly, people can pray for a bountiful spring, can work towards it, etc. But no one can really buy it or say for certain that a prosperous springtime is guaranteed.

This is why I have been taking time to get outside and try to enjoy the sunshine and all the natural beauty that fills the earth at this time of year. No matter what the stress of the day or the family drama of the week, it is important to take a moment to enjoy the season.

The Wine Country is filled with spring. Mustard, poppies, roses, green grass and blossoms all are out and about. But it only lingers for a short time and then its gone. Or for someone like me, spring then turns into hay fever season.
