The U.S. Air Force has categorized six cyber tools in its arsenal as weapons, aiming to secure funding for those capabilities in a constrained budget environment, Reuters reports.
Air Force Gen. Mark Welsh, the branch's chief of staff, decided to classify the tools as weapons to help make the case for funding them, Lt. Gen. John Hyten told Reuters.
Hyten did not say what those tools were, but added the branch plans to add 1,200 people to its cyber workforce, currently 6,000 workers strong, Hyten told Reuters.
The additions would include 900 military personnel, Hyten said.
Andrea Shalal-Esa writes Hyten's comments come as the Defense Department has started to publicly discuss offensive cyber operations.
China, Iran and Russia have all been widely been considered culprits in launching cyber attacks.
A Chinese military unit was recently singled out as the main perpetrator behind a series of attacks on U.S. businesses and government agencies.
