I know, sports fanatics love their sayings. With Aggies, its a "Gig Em," with UT, its a "Hook em Horns."
In basketball, the Alley-oop, or a slam dunk really, is fairly common a saying heard around the courts. The term, of French origin,The term is derived from
allez-hop, the cry of a circus acrobat about to leap
. It was used in the NFL and now in pro Basketball. Great!
So whats up with the "Tres Bien" shot? Is it just Tony Parker because when local news shows highschool basketball players making a shot, the sports reporter gives a "Tres Bien." Really? Is this a national label synonymous with greatness? What is so spectacular about the shot. Ball? Hole? wow?
Are we now replacing the Alley-oop with the Tres Bien? In literal translation, wouldn't every shot made be VERY GOOD? HA!
How about when the shot is a miss, we could call it the "Merde" shot? YEA.....that would get the crowds going. I'm all about changing tradition but please, please, please think, newsguys, think:
Tony Parker is FRENCH and Tres Bien, well OK. But don't assign the phrase to highschool basketball in Texas. That is simply tres ignorant!
