Vancouver is home to yet another film production this year--and this one features some of the country's brightest stars in a touching story directed by actor/writer/director Ben Ratner. "Down River" is currently well underway filming in Vancouver and will wrap on July 12th, 2012.
The film tackles some heavy themes, with the underlying message asking: What happens when you lose your guide before you find your way? Written and directed by Ratner (who is widely recognized from "Sisters & Brothers" and "Moving Malcolm"), "Down River" is the emotionally-stirring story of three young women: an in-demand but insecure actress, played by Gabrielle Miller (Corner Gas, Sisters & Brothers), a gifted rock singer teetering on the brink of self-destruction, played by Colleen Rennison (DaVinci’s City Hall) and a dynamic artist hiding under a paint-stained hoodie, played by Jennifer Spence (Stargate Universe, Continuum).
All of these woman live in the same building and their guide in life is a neighbor named Pearl, portrayed by Helen Shaver (The Color of Money, Desert Hearts), a charismatic and caring older woman who inspires them to new heights. When Pearl unexpectedly leaves their lives, the three are forced to overcome their fears and face the future without the guidance they've come to rely on.
Inspired by Ben Ratner's long-time friendship with actress Babz Chula, who passed away in 2010, "Down River" is a film about mentorship, friendship, living life to the fullest, and ultimately letting go.
Other actors joining this dynamic cast are Jay Brazeau (Fathers and Sons, Insomnia), Ali Liebert (Bomb Girls, Harper’s Island), Brian Markinson (Continuum, The Killing) and Teach Grant (Cult, Gunless).
