Allowances and Teens
Do you think that teens should be given allowances? We give a small one by today's standards of $10 a week. They aren't paid for doing chores because that's just something family members do without rewards to help each other live in a clean environment. They do though get deductions if one simple rule isn't followed. All kids have to check in during the afternoon via the phone to each me or my partner so we know what's the up for their after school hours.
What is your take on allowances?

I am actually going to start my 4 year old on allowances. He really wants toys, and he doesn't appreciate them all the time. We think if he has to work for his money it will give him a new appreciation. I know it seems young to start him but he is pretty mature for his age, and I want him to get the foundations of work ethic and responsibility while he is young. I didn't have it and I think that hurt me, and beleive me it wasn't because my mother didn't try I just was stubborn. I want to start him before he reaches plasticity.
So I am all for kids doing extra chores for an allowance, but I don't think they should be given one without responsibility attached. Your tactic of giving them the allowance at a set rate and then taking it away if they don't follow rules seems to have the same effect of responsibility attached.

Better late than never....sorry.
I do believe that teens should be given an allowance but I have a mixed view on just how they are paid. I am vehemently opposed to forking out a set $$$ amount and assigning basic chores.
No one pays ME for basic chores. :o)
Basics are what make the home function and it isn't up to one person to do it all - not supermommy or Mr. Mom.
That being said, I pay my children $1 per day - $30 per month for a chore sheet of chores that they sign off on (age appropriate) and time specified.
If I trip over a pair of tennis shoes or see jammies on the bathroom floor, then I have a look at said chore chart - oops, he marked it off as completed but it wasn't for picking up clutter before leaving for school. mmmmm. I red X it.
Every day, I divide the number of chores by the number complete and assess the daily earnings. .20 or a full $1...depends.
On saturdays, there are extra chores - bathroom toilet, tub and vaccuum own floor plus clean fishtank. They are included in the weekend list and are at their discretion on which day completed.
They can earn extra money - $3 for mowing, $3 / hour for babysitting the 6-yo, $3 bathing dog....
They keep a time sheet which I keep on accounting software as an employee and then pay once a month when hubby is paid. It is totally based upon work completed and chores must STILL be done. :o)
My youngest puts away plastics from dishwasher, picks up toys and shoes and brio train set and rinses his own cups (plastics). We are still working on flushing the potty. LOL
