The tricky part about the box office report for a holiday weekend is jumping to conclusions and those pesky estimates. Not to mention the numbers will be all over the place because there is that three-day figure for a regular weekend and then the Monday added for a
holiday. But, this weekend one thing for sure was going to happen. "The Avengers" would fall from the top spot and it did. The new champ, as expected, is "MIB 3." So, it looks like a $55 million haul for "MIB 3" for the three-day and add in another $20 million for the holiday and the estimates are at $70 million.
To the point of that holiday weekend, let's track both the three-day and the four-day. Oh, and then there is something about "The Avengers." That story hasn't ended even though it is no longer No. 1. Too many times that happens. Not here. It is now the fourth highest grossing film of
all-time (domestically). It has now passed "The Phantom Menace."
Three-day
1. "MIB 3" - $55,000,0002
2. "The Avengers" - $36,987,000
3. "Battleship" - $10,800,000
Four-day
1. "MIB 3" - $70,000,000
2. "The Avengers" - $46.8 million
3. "Battleship" - $13.7 million
All-time (domestically)
1. "Avatar" - $760,507,625
2. "Titanic" - $658,546,990
3. "The Dark Knight" - $533,345,358
4. "Marvel's The Avengers" - $523,6563,000
5. "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" - $474,544,427
No doubt, "The Avengers" will pass "The Dark Knight" soon but can it come close to catching "Titanic"?
