It's Christmas and the world is broke. How can anyone afford to give their kids gifts when the cash is low? It's actually not that hard as long as you don't mind being creative.
There will always be a few places that parents can turn when times at hard like the
Salvation Army and
Catholic Charities. They will provide a few toys for under the tree and a stocking.
Not everyone wants to go that route though. Some people will wipe out an already over extended credit card and go further into debt praying that a light yet seen will able at the end of the tunnel. That isn't the wisest choice.
If you have a local Dollar Tree or
Dollarama it's easy to give the kids a decent Christmas and still pay rent. Young children are fairly easy to buy for, just gather art supplies and pack them into a colourful box and the kiddies are happy campers. The problems start when those tots grow up. Teens aren't into fat crayons and colouring books.
Teen girls though still enjoy bath stuff. Dollarama often has items that are in other stores for much more. They also have cute socks and makeup. Stuff a cute little purse with makeup and your girls will be all smiles on Christmas morning.
Teen boys are a little tougher to pay for. The price of their toys generally can wreck any bank account. Still it's possible to make a nice little pile on the tree for them also. Heavy mitts and scarves are always needed. Search the electronic aisle and you're sure to find something that they will love.
At the end of the day anything you give will be treasured. Kids already know times are tough. By not going overboard during the holidays you can teach the younger generation that gifting from the heart is what the season is about.
Trust me if you go cheap you'll have less stress come the New Year.
