What's Morals Got To Do With It?

So, right off the bat: I'm a liberal. Totally anti-war, totally pro-choice, pro-legalization of all drugs. You know. I can't really think of a single conservative view I have on anything. That being said, I'm not going to force-feed my political ideology down your throats. I'm not going to tell you why you're wrong and I'm right because the truth is, all this is what makes our country beautiful. The right to hope, dream, think, and express ourselves as we want. Yes, I'm aware there are limits, but I hope you get the idea.
That's just it, though. The right to dream, think, and express ourselves as we want. And we have a republican presidential candidate who doesn't get it. One who doesn't believe in birth control or a woman's right to choose because his catholic beliefs don't allow it. A man who said JFK's speech on religion and politics made him want to throw up. So what you're saying, Mr. Santorum, is that because you're a catholic, you want me to abide by your catholic beliefs. I'm not a catholic. I'm a (non-practicing) Jew. I do fast on Yom Kippur, so maybe I'll turn the tables and make you fast with me.
I would love for someone to give me an example where religion and politics have mixed and mixed well. In regards to Israel, my fellow Jews will say..."Well, the bible says..." Shut up! What about the people who don't believe anything the bible says. So let me reiterate: RELIGION AND POLITICS DON'T MIX!!!
BUT I can at least understand how and why there is a correlation. I can understand why some people might feel better with a little religion mixed into their bowl of politics. Why some disagree with abortion. I mean no one actually LIKES abortion, but that's for another time. Here is what I don't get....
So, last night/early this morning, I'm discussing all this with a friend who totally disagrees with all my beliefs. The feeling is mutual. It's almost kinda fun....and he says to me, "Obama has no morals." So you know I ask if he's cheated on his wife (if he has I'm pretty sure I don't give a shit.) Dude says he lied repeatedly to the American people...I, of course, remind him of Bush and Iraq and all that jazz. You know the US chain hotels being built aren't suspect at all. But anyway...we go back and forth for a bit, and then I'm like "Hold up...morals!? What does morals have to do with any of it?!" So he "admits" that saying Obama has NO morals may have been a bit harsh. So he changes it to "Obama has a different set of morals than Rick Santorum." And I'm still like "WHAT!?!?!"
Like seriously, people! Help me understand this. Tell me how Obama has no morals or different morals? Tell me how morals and politics relate to each other in any way. If you think it's wrong to give a women the right to choose or to negotiate with your enemies rather than fight them or to believe in the separation of church and state, fine. But morals has nothing to do with it!
Wanna talk about "morals?" Fine. President Clinton cheated on his wife. There you go. Pretty sure that had no impact whatsoever on my life, but you know.
So again, I ask you, What's morals (and religion) got do with it?!
