Tips for a poor journalist stuck where nothing big happens

I know there has to be lots of DJ's on here in the same predicament as me. I live in a small town on the west coast of Florida that is 50+ miles away from any major city. The biggest thing that happens here is the manatees show up for the summer. I am a student living off of my tuition refund and unemployment. How can I gain some in-field experience, get my name out there, and do it without breaking the bank?
I could very well cover stories in town, but like I mentioned, nothing happens here that people would want to read. I sit at my computer regurgitating news stories that others have written, and that's cool. It gives me practice and experience. However, I would like to get more proactive.
