100 Mile

When I was in Saint John Nb I, with others and a few local merchants, set up a 100 mile diet group. The idea is basically to eat foods that come from within a 100 mile radius of where you live.

This is difficult to do 3 meals per day so we set it at one, any one. We also established a local food buying club through a locally owned small grocery shop. He went to a farmers' market on the Peninsula on Saturday mornings and bought local and sometimes organic produce. we paid a small fee each week 10 bucks and b he was able to buy greater quantity and get a lower prices.

We'd pick up the food on Saturday afternoon. This made some local produce available for us to meet our 100 mile diet. It was an educational experience and we saved a few bucks as well. Plus the merchant generated more income and established stronger relationships with regional sellers.

Bob, great post and a great idea. I think I'd be able to do something like this with a lot of initial legwork and research to try to find 100 mile suppliers. However, we already incorporate a lot of this into our everyday lives. On our travels back and forth to the cottage we stop at a few places, one is a farm where we buy frozen meats (steaks, roasts, chickens, etc. from their farm), corn, honey, preserves, and pies, and we also stop at the Canal Road Farmers Market that is located in the Holland Marsh and all the veggies are grown right out their back door.

This is an excellent way to buy food direct from the farmer.
