'War Horse' Leaps Into Tim's Top Ten

As the year progresses and as Fall hits, my top ten best films list starts to emerge. Now, the last week of the year, it's time to reveal my final list. Along the way films came and went but these are the ones that had the staying power, or the luck of being released during the last two months of the year. Yes, it's all about timing for many, but some can stand the test of the long year.
"The Artist" - - "War Horse" - - "My Week With Marilyn" - -"The Help" - - "Harry Potter" - - "Martha Marcy May Marlene" - - "The Descendants" - - "Midnight in Paris" -- "Tree of Life" - - "J. Edgar" - - OTHERS: "Meloncholia," "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "Hugo," "50/50" and "Young Adult."
Notes: With the addition of "War Horse," a film had to drop out, but which one would it be? The most likely should have been "J.Edgar" since it was perched at 10. Nope. I went with "Meloncholia." "War Horse" not only leaped into the top ten, it landed at No. 2, so the others all slipped. The one that remains the same is at No. 1 - - "The Artist."
Favorite right now:
Film: "The Artist" and now "War Horse." The latter has the better release timing and will stick in the minds of voters as we head deeper into award season.
Actress: Michelle Williams was "it" early on and is still solid. Meryl Streep is getting that buzz I wrote about much earlier this year. In fact, I have discussed it for years. it is the idea that she wins all the time. No, she is nominated all the time. And since she does not win all the time it could be her year. But, enter Glenn Close and the idea that it is her time. She's due, too, for Oscar, but not Emmy. That battle may help someone else emerge, like Michelle.
Actor: I will say this once more. Hollywood love George Clooney despite his lack of really big box office. I think the favorite right now is Christopher Plummer, not just because of his recent role in "The Beginners," but for his career. Yes, that happens all the time. See Paul Newman.
Director: After the recent screening of "War Horse," kudos to Steven Spielberg. Martin Scorsese has recently won.
More to come...
