Technology and social ability

I wrote about this on my blog and I want to share a version with you.
Have you ever noticed how much technology as take over the lives of humans? How often do you find yourself walking down the street or standing in line and rather than stand their quietly or engage in conversation you turn to your cellphone for a social networking site to see 'what is happening"?
I recently sat in a classroom with 4 girls while putting together a team project. Every 10 minutes 3 of them would stop in unison to go to their cell phone to see 'what was happening". It was as if they were bored or needed some kind of outlet. Will this kind of behavior lead to anything as time goes by?
For my own self, I have a cell phone but I don't go online with it. I use it only for texting and phone calls but you won't find me on it while in line unless I get a phone call or a text. If I make a text or phone call I usually do before I go about my business. Yet, others don't do this. How many people do you observe doing 'something' on their phone while walking down the street or standing in line. Seems we could be becoming a nation of introverts as a result of technology and not realize it?
What do you think?
