Community Gardens

Posted Apr 2, 2008 by  Bob Ewing in Food 22 comments
The freshest food is food that you grow yourself; however, many people lack the space to grow much more than a few kitchen herbs on a sunny windowsill.

If you want to garden and grow and maintain your own food, flowers or herbs but do not have a space suitable at home then a community garden can be the place where you can set your gardening passion free.

A community garden is a plot of land that is usually divided into subplots with each gardener having their own plot. You can grow herbs flowers or vegetables or a mix of all three.

I definitely want to hear how the hay bale garden turns out.

Deb would you mind sending me a link to that one I wanna go back over it and see if I can get some pointers on how maybe to try a smaller patio version.

Has anybody tried growing things like cucumbers on a trellis? I think I'm going to try this out this year. I'm growing more in pots this year, while my other half is doing the outside garden.

With prices getting so high every bit helps.

This is the first attempt at growing peas and boy was their alot more seeds in that little .25 pack than we thought. I see lots of thinning in our future.

Apparently this is an unusual year, srping here is often cool but the snow is another matter, last year it was not like this.

My husband and I want to work on a community garden initiative in Niles, my home town. We have so many plans to help make our community far more self sufficient it is too bad we are too poor to enact them. heh

We wanted to make a community flower garden, community orchard, and community veggie garden. Hopefully we can do so when we are more influential in the community.

The flower, orchard and veggie combo is a great idea. Does Niles have a community garden policy? Do they lease land for community gardens?
