Barbara Eden's new book, "Jeanie Out of The Bottle" is a delight to read and is full of many recollections of happier times. For fans who like the series "I Dream of Jeannie" the book has lots of behind the scenes details.
For those who are enamoured by tales of Hollywood, especially of its more golden days, Eden provides lots of interesting and insightful accounts.
Eden's look back is delightful and funny. Yet it is also personal with a lot of recollections of her early years growing up in San Francisco.
That is one reason why I went to see her on stage, live in person at the Castro Theater this past Sunday, July 10.
I wanted to hear more about the San Francisco she knew and loved. And, the San Francisco that I think had much to do with that special magic she brought not only to the "I Dream of Jeannie" show but to show business itself.
When host Marc Huestis interviewed Eden that Sunday at The Castro Theater, he noted that the "I Dream of Jeannie" series began rather conservatively. But then as the series continued for five seasons and 139 episodes, it went a bit psychedelic, reflecting the changing times that were the 1960's.
It might be said too that Eden was also among the pioneers of Television because the "I Dream of Jeannie" show was so iconic. It along with "Bewitched" and many others of that time are unique.
Most of what she said that evening is in the book. And while it does "tell all" in some instances, Eden's recollections are expressed well and not simply another dish of gossip.
"Jeannie out of the bottle"
is worth reading.
