For the past five years, I've been enjoying the burgeoning improv comedy scene in Toronto. Some incredible talent rock stages across the city, from the Rivoli to Clinton's.
But my fave spot to catch improv is Comedy Bar, a venue on Bloor near Ossington that only stages comedy shows. On Friday nights, I often check out Catch23, an improv comedy competition running from 8pm to 10pm. It pits three teams against each other, and the audiences cheers for the scores for each scene, out of five.
So if I thought the scene was incredible and deserves a four, I would cheer when the host asked us to cheer for that number. A guest judge also gives a score out of five.
Forget the competition aspect of Catch23; what really makes this show worth watching is the talent on stage. Vets such as Kayla Lorette and Sarah Hillier and Alex Tindal make the scenes smart and snappy. Some guest improv'ers also perform well, although I've noticed teams matched together for the first time don't have the same cohesion as more experienced squads.
If you're in Toronto and looking for a fun Friday night show, I'd suggest Catch23. It's great how you can grab a pint and some nachos while watching this show, making it an entertaining warm-up to whatever else you have planned later on that night.
