article imageRestaurant owner refuses to serve gay people or 'freak' customers

By Brett Wilkins     Feb 8, 2014 in Small Business
Enid - An Oklahoma restaurant and bar owner has raised eyebrows and ire by refusing to serve gay people, blacks, Hispanics and other racial minorities, welfare recipients, disabled people, Muslims and Democrats.
"I really don't want gays around," says Gary James, owner of Gary's Chicaros Club in Enid. "Any man who would compromise his body would compromise anything," James told KFOR.
"I've been in business 44 years, I think I can spot a freak or a faggot," added James, whose official t-shirt touts Gary's Chicaros as a "faggot-free zone" "where great whites gather" and where blacks, Democrats and Muslims should avoid his restaurant. James says he's "proud" to wear that shirt.
This isn't the first time James has caused a stir with his bigotry. When he ran for Enid city council in 2009, he explained to a local newspaper why he didn't allow hats in his business.
"I have one rule that does away with 95 percent of the trash," James told the Enid News and Eagle. "If they are rude enough to wear a hat inside the building, I don't want them here. Most of those little faggots have their hats on backwards."
"I don't like girlie men," James added. "I'm not fond of men with all kinds of metal in their face. My customers don't want them around, and I don't want them around."
A regular customer named Matt Gard recently complained that James barred him because he uses a wheelchair. James denies this.
"He created an issue. You only have one time here. You create an issue, you're out forever," said James.
So what kind of customers are welcome at Gary's Chicaros Club?
"Well, if you work, you own a business, pay your taxes, you're more than welcome here," James told KFOR. But, "If you're on welfare, stay at home and spend my money there."
"I don't deal with these people walking down the street with no jobs on welfare," James explained.
James told KFOR he just doesn't understand what all the fuss is about.
"If I reached over there and slapped the shit out of you, you should be offended," he said. "But to call someone a 'chink,' or to call me a bigot, that doesn't bother me."
The Huffington Post notes it is not illegal to bar potential customers because they are gay in Oklahoma. Although state law prohibits discrimination based on race, religion or gender, sexual minorities are not protected.
