Van Halen reuniting with David Lee Roth for 40-stop tour.
The last time the four original members of Van Halen were seen on stage together was as award presenters at an awards show, on MTV and David Lee Roth made a fool out of himself and the rest of the band dancing, waving his arms and generally trying to steal the show while another artist was accepting his award.
Rumors of a Van Halen reunion had been bubbling under the surface and fans hoped that the on stage appearance by all the original members meant the reunion was on but later Roth issued a statement saying he'd been the "unwitting participant" in a publicity stunt engineered to sell more copies of Best of Volume I, and that he told Eddie at the time that he didn't "think it was a good idea for the band to go to New York half-cocked."
And things just fell apart from there.
But now, Billboard has reported that the reunion is in fact going to happen and the deal for a 40-date amphitheater tour is almost finalized.
Roth has not performed with the group since leaving in 1985 to pursue a solo career. Van Halen continued releasing albums and touring with several other frontmen including Sammy Hagar and Gary Charone (ex-Extreme singer).
The tour will not be a 100% pure reunion tour as bassist Michael Anthony has decided he will not participate in the regathering of the troops and tour. He has instead joined up with Van Halen's second former frontman Sammy Hagar for a series of shows in which they billed themselves as The Other Half and performed both Roth and Van Hagar-era Van Halen tunes.
Eddie's 15-year-old son, Wolfgang, will be playing bass in the reunion band.. let me say that again... Eddie's 15-year-old son will be playing bass in the reunion band. Can you imagine - 15 years old and he's going to play to stadiums, sold out across the country.. with Van Halen.
"That's a lot of pressure for Wolfie," Hagar told Billboard.com a couple weeks ago. "Just 'cause he's Eddie's son doesn't mean he can go out and play in arenas and perform and entertain an audience for two hours.
This will be an event no doubt - fans can expect one of two things... either the greatest rock show of all time with Dave at his best... or an insanely bad on stage disaster featuring older men trying to recreate a youthful sound mixed with the Partridge family. Stay tuned.
