An Oxfordshire couple in their 40s were desperate to have children and paid a woman the sum of 10,000 pounds (almost $20,000 US) to be a surrogate mother.
Once the woman found out she was pregnant with twins, she demanded to be paid a bonus of 5,000 pounds (about $10,000 US) or else she would not surrender custody of the children after they were born. The surrogate insisted the additional money was necessary to cover additional expenses and that she would have to have a Caesarean.
Said the surrogate who is married, "My husband was behind me 100 per cent and if anyone’s got any problems with that they can piss off.”
The childless couple finally agreed to pay the added cost. But now the twins, who were born prematurely, are both very ill with respiratory problems. The girl is currently on a ventilator while the boy is in a special care unit for babies.
