Two Men convicted of shooting a Mexican Drug runner while he ran from them unarmed have turned themselves in.
Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean were patrolling the border when a Mexican drug runner attempted to cross the border illegally. The man was attempting to smuggle 750lb of marijuana into the country.
The two men said that he had a gun, but no such gun was ever found.
The men were rightly punished--but here's the kicker, they were given over a decade each and Davila, the drug runner, was granted immunity if he testified against the men...
Since when does one crime cancel out another? And to take it even further, the man is suing the US government for $5,000,000 for 'violating his civil rights.' I'm sorry, but even our citizens don't get that much money when they're actually innocent of any wrongdoing. This is just absurd.
I think the two should be given some type of punishment--perhaps 5 years probation and a demotion in their pay-grade. But to allow this man to go scott-free is ridiculous at it's most obvious level.
The main reason the two are serving 10 years is that they tried to cover up the incident--so prison time isn't a stretch..but Rapists get off with half the time these two got..and they go out and do it again!
I am in no way advocating their actions..but I am definitely against giving this man, who was trying to smuggle in $1,000,000 worth of marijuana into our country any type of compensation. He was given free medical care and a free pass on his crimes--that's more than enough.
Supporters of the two patrolmen are seeking a pardon from President Bush..it is unknown whether or not the two will receive it--over 200,000 people have signed a petition calling for their release.
