article imageAdvice if your checks ever get stolen: don't tell your bank

By Chris V. Thangham     Jan 13, 2007 in Business
A Bank's response to customer when the checks are stolen, don't call the bank you are protected better than reporting to the bank.
It started innocently: I ordered new checks two weeks ago, and a few days later, I noticed a box in my mailbox as I was heading out in the morning. I made a mental note that my checks had arrived and left, but when I came back at night, the box was no longer there. I looked in the various places that I might have put it, but it didn't turn up, so at this point, I decided that the safest course of action would be to call Wells Fargo, cancel these checks and order new ones. And of course, to monitor my account for any unexpected activity until the checks get canceled.
This customer had a bank account for 8 Years with no problems with Wells Fargo Bank until he lost this book of checks. When he called the Bank Customer service, they told him that only they will cancel the last six numbered checks not the whole range of checks that the bank issued. The customer found it odd that they will cancel only the last six not the entire range. He had a long argument, the Bank rep told him if he didn't call and if somebody else issued that check then the customer is not liable. But since he called he was protected only for the last six checks and the only way to clear this problem is close the bank account of 8 years. This was an odd rule by Wells Fargo. Finally after going back and forth, the customer had to cancel the Wells Fargo account and started a new account in Bank of America, which is not a Saint Bank also.
My Company had a similar problem with Bank of America, one of the movers who brought in Furniture stole the company checks, we did the same thing but it was a nightmare to get the money back and the service charges refunded. What do you think about this Wells Fargo Bank service? Do you had similar problems with your local bank? I use online bank so far I have no problems, send checks via online Payment, only rarely had to use checks.
