Ponti was admitted to a hospital in Geneva, Switzerland 10 days ago with a lung ailment. Family says he died peacefully in the night.
Ponti is internationally known for such films as
Dr. Zhivago (for which he received an Oscar nomination), La Strada, The Verdict, The Cassandra Crossing and Blowup.
Loren and Ponti, who met when she was a 22-year-old budding starlet, collaberated on many projects over the years, furthering both their careers, and earning Loren an Oscar for
Two Women.
