article imageShell steps down as Raiders coach

After posting the team's worst record in 40 years, Art Shell has decided to resign. He said he didn't feel he was doing the job he was brought in to do.
Contrary to what ESPN has been reporting, Al Davis did not fire Art Shell. The man has retired after a miserable season--not of his own making of course.
He had, arguable, one of the worst quarterbacks of all time playing half of the season: Andrew Walter. The man couldn't handle the ball half the time, he fumbled the snap more times than I care to remember. He held on to the ball for 6 and 7 seconds, always taking a sack.
The offensive line was no help either, half the time Walter only had 2 seconds to throw the ball--no good for any quarterback.
Anyway, there are several coaches lined up as prospects for the job: Rob Ryan, the raiders current defensive coordinator who has coached them to a astound 4th ranked defense (offense was last), could be promoted. Bill Cowher is another possibility, the man has recently resigned at Pittsburgh and the Raiders may be able to work out a deal with the Steelers to buy out the last year of the contract. Pete Carroll is the type of man Al Davis would like to put into the seat, he's a proven winner. He's brought USC to the national title game 3 times in the last 5 years..
If the Raiders can pick up any of these people, next year should be a lot better.
