article imageOil Firm Funded Discrediting of Science

By Tar De Moutonnoir     Jan 4, 2007 in Environment
It has emerged that Exxon Mobil Corp. funded 43 ideological groups between 1998 and 2005 to the tune of $16 million in a coordinated effort to disclaim the science behind global warming.
Dr. James McCarthy, a professor at Harvard University, said the company has sought to "create the illusion of a vigorous debate" about global warming. Many scientists say carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases from tailpipes and smokestacks are warming the atmosphere like a greenhouse, melting Arctic sea ice and alpine glaciers and disturbing the lives of animals and plants.
The report by the nonprofit advocacy group mirrors similar claims by Britain's leading scientific academy. In September, the Royal Society asked the oil company to halt support for groups that "misrepresented the science of climate change."
This is not beyond the big oil companies and doesn't surprise me one bit. It's not unlike the pressure exerted by Bush administration officials on Environmental Protection Agency officials to downplay the significance of man's influence on global warming, and their subsequent rewriting of important environmental reports on behalf of those scientists.
