Samsung releases the first Double-sided LCD to the market.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world's largest provider of thin-film transistor, liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels announced today that it has created the first LCD panel that can produce independent images on each side of a mobile LCD display. Samsung's new double-sided LCD can show two entirely different pictures or sets of visual data simultaneously on the front and back of the same screen. Other conventional double-sided LCDs can only show a reverse image of the same video data.
This new development will replace two display panels with one, thereby reducing overall thickness of mobile products by at least 1mm.
Regular LCD's so far has been able to show only the reverse image of the front screen like a mirror image, this Samsung LCD is able to show two distinct images on the front and back of the LCD (see the related article, for world's slimmest LCD by Samsung). They are trying develop this double sided LCD for a Mobile device. I can't imagine what will be the use for this, can you think where they can this be useful for? I know some use double monitors to do various Graphic functions on Computers, if they have this in Computers it will be quite useful, but again it will be best if it side by side rather than front and back. I can see one application it might be useful for an Advertising Display like a Billboard with two distinct ads or images.
