In January a new website will go live and revolutionize the way we download music on the internet. Sites like iTunes and Yahoo! Music just may be a thing of the past! Spiralfrog will provide free music downloads on their site and it's all done legally.
A few weeks ago a good friend of mine was terminated from his job. It seems his supervisor found mp3 files on his work computer and a few peer-to-peer file training programs. He was fired for downloading music to the company computer which his supervisor stressed was not only against company policy but was illegal. My friend felt humiliated and a bit scared as his supervisor kept stressing the illegal aspect of downloading music without paying for the files. We joked about the "undercover FCC" at his former job just last night.
Well, those days will be far behind us all in January when the site SpiralFrog.com goes live. SpiralFrog is the first site that allows its users absolutely free downloads of music files with no per file fee and no membership fees. The site has signed agreements with EMI Music Publishing, Universal Music Group, BMI, and several other large music and lyric publishers to allow SpiralFrog access to the music catalog. The site will be paid by advertising that appears on the site. The publishing companies will receive a portion of the proceed from these advertisement sales and pass it on to the artists.
"[This] shows our commitment to proper compensation of music writers, and gives us a broader inventory of prestigious songs. Appreciation of a wide range of music is high amongst the 13 34 year old set," said Robin Kent, Chief Executive Officer of SpiralFrog in a press release available on the site.
If only my friend had waited until January for that download! SpiralFrog can be found on the internet at
