Armed men attacked two foreign oil facilities in southern Nigeria on Thursday, and both shut down production following the assaults in the restive, oil-rich region. Royal Dutch Shell PLC, which came under attack earlier this week.
On Thursday, around 12 gunmen attack and forced the shut down of a Total SA pumping station. Three men were killed. The company, citing the security of the facility, shut it down indefinitely.
Later, gunmen took control of an Italian-run facility, Eni SpA. No enjuries or damages were reported even though 18 workers were present.
The station is still occupied by the gunmen, however the pumps have been shut down..the 40,000 barrel a day station will not be pumping for a while.
These types of attacks are all too common in Nigeria today. The gunmen feel this is 'the only way to get their share of the oil profits,' and that the government is keeping all the money for itself. These attacks are sometimes so violent that entire shifts of workers are murdered in cold blood.
The country is used to this though..Once the threat of attacks sent the oil industry in Nigeria plummeting in the stocks..now the attacks themselves hardly cause a stir.
