What would the Christmas season be without fecal symbols alongside images of the baby Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the Yuletide hollow log.
Symbols of defecation have been a part of Christmas celebrations for centuries in the Catalonia region of Spain. Figures of "El Caganer," a well dressed peasant baring his rear end in the act of "pooping" are common amongst nativity scenes and mantelpieces. Apparently defecation is equated with health and fertility in this area of Spain.
Considering some of the outrage being expressed over things like a bus driver wearing a Santa hat or a gay nativity scene, can you imagine the complaints "the great defecator" would stir up if placed in a nativity scene here in North America?
