Chuck (Watergate) Colson began the Prison Fellowship Initiative twentyfive years ago after he was released from prison. This program has been so successful that it has spread throughout the U.S. Canada and overseas.
Several years ago Prison Fellowship ran a trial program called Innerchange Freedom Initiative (IFI) in Texas. It was so successful that the program was introduced in some other states, one of them in Iowa. A study done by a secular university, the University of Pennsylvania proved that this initiative helped reduce recindivism.
All was going well until some civil liberties group caught wind of it and they took the IFI to court. The reason? This "faith based" organization is receiving partial funding (40% to be exact) from Iowa state and that is a violation of the consitution for the separation of church and state. A judge actually ruled in their favour and ordered IFI to repay Iowa state several million dollars.
As if that is not enough, in comes the New York Times and ran a piece on this program. The link above is a commentary by Prison Fellowship on this Times article. Just goes to show the extent the liberal media would go to in order to propagate a lie. I have been following this story from day one as I work with inmates in the prison on a voluntary basis and I subscribe to these BreakPoint commentaries. There is no way that inmates are "coerced" to participate in this program, otherwise it won't be successful.
To add insult to injury, other newspapers are picking up the Times article and reporting it - a prime example of how propaganda spreads.
