Across the nation, thousands of Native Americans have or will be expelled from their tribes. Money is said to be at the bottom of these moves.
Native American tribes are considered sovereign nations and as such have the right in determining who can or cannot join their ranks. In other words, it is at their sole discretion to give or take away a person's cultural identity. Loss of tribal status means losing access to medical care, housing and education benefits. They also lose their share of whatever profits their given tribe is entitled to and this can amount to a few thousand dollars per month as in the case of casino gaming profits.
So the fewer the tribe members, the greater the share of the profits for those still in the tribe. Hmmmmm.
