Investigator for prisons says raise in order?
Howard Sapers claims Canada's inmates are underpaid. He said they have not had a raise in over 20 years for the work they do and programs in prisons. He wants to raise it at least to minimum wage.
The maximum wage is set at $6.90 per day. This rate is paid for participation in prison programs, working in the laundry department, and in certain workshops, including metal, wood and textile.
He said increasing prisoners' wages would help them develop a sense of responsibility and improve their chances of reintegrating into society.
Jean-Claude Bernheim, a criminal law specialist said should also be subject to the same deductions as other workers, including income taxes and employment insurance.
Federal inmates get three free meals a day as well as essential items, such as soap. But they have to pay out of their own pockets for additional treats, like cigarettes, booze and chocolate.
Correctional Service Canada is studying the possibility of increasing prisoner compensation, as well as indexing it to the rate of inflation.
So they go to prison and are allowed booze??? And also now may get a pay while in there?
So crime does pay.
No wonder our prisons are full.
