Up to 300 homeless people will find emergency shelter at Calgary’s Stampede Grounds.
Officals are trying to prevent homeless Calgarians from freezing on the streets due to the recent freezing tempertures.
Once the Mustard Seed’s shelter is full every night, the homeless will be bused to the Stampede Grounds. The temporary shelter will be open between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Hours will be extended if the cold snap continues during the day because existing shelters are full beyond capacity.
The cold has already killed a few people. Two people living in a schoolbus heated by a propane heater were found dead, frozen solid, in the back of the bus.
