I just got an email from the Google Video team warning that three posts were made that may contain the W32/Kapser.A@mm worm (a mass mail worm).
I am subscribed to the Google Video email updates that are sent out once a day.

You can imagine my surprise when I got this email from them:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Google Video Team
Reply-To: Google-Video-blog-owner@googlegroups.com
To: Google Video blog
Date: Nov 8, 2006 2:08 AM
Subject: About recent posts to the Google Video group

On Tuesday evening, three posts were made to the Google Video
Blog-group that should not have been posted. This has now been
addressed and fixed.

Still, some of these posts may have contained a virus called
W32/Kapser.A@mm -- a mass mailing worm. If you think you have
downloaded this virus from the group or an email message, we recommend
you run your antivirus program to remove it. If you do not have an
antivirus program, you can download Norton AntiVirus software for free
from the Google pack,

http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html?nopers

We're sorry for any inconvenience, and we're taking steps to ensure
that this doesn't happen again.

The Google Video Team
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not an expert on Viruses so I don't know how exactly you can get the virus. And by Google's vague email saying "If you think you have downloaded the virus..." I don't even know how I would know if I did?

Wait until this news makes it into the mainstream press. Google is going to have some 'splainin' to do.

Can someone out there explain how this works? How is the virus transmitted so I know to avoid doing that.

I wonder how limited this really was. I think anyone that's been to Google Video should at least be concerned. This isn't going to help their image at all. Great heads-up Allan.

Run a virus check at least to be safe. This is likely not a reason for mass paranoia (yet), but it is a serious worm. You can read details about it here.

What are you saying Chris? Do I sound paranoid to you? Did you make that astounding connection because I'm a woman or something?

I'm just saying it's not as serious as some worldwide worm attacks have been (yet).

Hard to read sarcasm through a post. It's all good.

Google Video the site has NOT been effected at all and never had this "virus". If you read it you'll see it says that three posts on that blog group were infected, using deductive reasoning Id assume the worm infected a Google computer and sent to the mailing list.

Thanks for the typo note Trekkie -- I updated the headline.

its not as bad as anyone thinks... You probably have to explicitly download it or open this file in order to become infected. Nothing to see here. on a side note , why are so many comments hidden

Comments are hidden if enough people vote them as Irrelevant. Have your say and vote positive if you wish.

Go to this site G4 Tech Support and download Spybot Search & Destroy Ad-Aware SE & Ewido Security Suite...

Make sure you download the "FREE" personal versions, then install them and make sure you look for updates... Run them and let them kill any Malware you happen to have on your computer...

If your still having problems signup at the site and post the problems in the "Tech Support Forum"... I've been there for more than 2-years and there are alot of helpful people working there...

Also make sure you update your Anti Virus Software daily or ever few days...

Agree with KeithLDick above. Spybot Search & Detroy and Ad-Aware are the two I use to find spyware. For a good free virus scanner, I use "Clamwin".

In answer to the earlier questions, it sounds like this has nothing to do with videos as such. Just an other email-borne virus. As to how you may contract it, if you downloaded the infected message from the email list, various email clients (like Outlook) have a bad habit of executing attachments. Sometimes without you even clicking on them.

As others have said, the best way to be sure is to do a full virus sweep with an up-to-date checker. For prevention, I'd recommend using an email client that doesn't execute attachments without your explicit say-so.

Are you sure about that? Your browser wouldn't download a program like that unless you saved the file. Google uses flash and AVI to stream video.
