They are calling it "emotion detector" software for companies to use in their call centers to try an imporve customer experience.
Like many of these technologies, I have two concerns. The first is just how reliably they work. Human emotion is complex enough for us to try and understand. I doubt a machine could do much better. My second concern is more abstract. If this technology does work, is there a threat to privacy from something like this? What if it were to be reduced in size to the point that anyone could have it in their cell phone? Could one manage a reliable built-in lie detector in ten or twenty years time? Personally, I don't think so, but it might be good fodder for a speculative fiction story.
