The FBI searched two produce companies Wednesday for evidence of a crime in the nationwide E. coli outbreak that killed one person and sickened at least 191 others.
I'm still bitter about this news because I used to eat this stuff a lot.
Interesting, the FBI and FDA issued warrants to search Natural Selection Foods LLC plant in San Juan Bautista and a Growers Express plant in Salinas to figure out if both companies followed proper food safety procedures.
They say deliberate contamination is not suspected.
"We are investigating allegations that certain spinach growers and distributors may not have taken all necessary or appropriate steps to ensure that their spinach was safe before they were placed into interstate commerce," U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan said in a statement posted on CNN.
CNN points out one interesting thing: The fact that they investigated in the first place suggests authorities suspected a crime COULD have been committed.
I know I'm scared to death of this stuff now. Probably will be for a long time.
