Sony have announced that two new film franchises are to go into production, both spinoffs from "The Amazing Spider-Man": "Venom" and "Sinister Six."
The rebooted Spider-Man franchise began in 2012 with The Amazing Spider-Man, which starred Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) in the eponymous role.
Garfield will return in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, scheduled for release in May 2014; the first official trailer of which was released earlier this month.
Garfield, 30, is also signed to appear in a second sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, due sometime in 2016.
The Sinister Six (a group of supervillains) and Venom are foes of Spider-Man in the Marvel universe.
According to Digital Spy, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner — all writers on the third installment in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise — together with Ed Solomon and Drew Goddard "will be overseeing the franchise with producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, and director Marc Webb."
Webb has directed the first two Amazing Spider-Man movies and is expected to complete the hat-trick with the third.
As for the two spinoffs, Digital Spy reports that "Venom will be penned by Kurtzman, Orci and Solomon, with Kurtzman in line to direct [while] The Sinister Six will be written by Goddard, who may also direct."
