Op-Ed: It's an odd world —Rob Ford, Conrad Black and Adult Kid syndrome

By Marcus Hondro     Dec 11, 2013 in Politics
It is an odd, odd world and it is not likely it will ever be anything but. After all, Rob Ford is the Mayor of a major city. He's a roly-poly kid, Ford, and not meaning plumpness, but the roly-poly toy, the one that rights itself every time it falls.
There was Rob back up once again, this time to do some talking on a TV show. Robbie was the guest of another roly-poly guy, this one, Conrad Black, more the roly-poly kid-grinch; the studied intellect who, underneath the use of language and calm demeanor hides bigotry and disdain (in the vein of America's Tea Party). Conrad is very nearly as immature as his friend Rob. The two cannot get past their childhoods, their anger.
The name of Conrad's show? The Zoomer!
Rob was sure dishing 'em out — example: Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair being after him not because of his disgraceful behavior and involvement with drug dealers and other criminals, but, Robbie said, because he, the Mayor, supports budget cuts.
A self-serving assertion that it's unlikely Ford himself believes.
Conrad was tossing out questions so soft they could have played on the Toronto Maple Leafs of old. He seemed happy, elated, to have someone in the chair next to him that was taking shots at the media. He doesn't like the media either for, despite his criminal past and underhanded dealings, his tattered reputation is really the work of the media.
"Darned media!" the two seemed to be saying. "Evil, nasty media!"
They blamed. Like kids will. And accused, pointing fingers, Conrad with his demeanor and his tone, Robbie with his words. There he was talking about Daniel Dale, trotting out again a story that is pure fabrication, and has been proven to be so, and his buddy did not call him on it, bought it, accepted his words to the effect that Dale was a pedophile.
Here's this:
NOT TRUE. PROVEN NOT TRUE. MR. DALE NEVER WENT TO THE FENCE, NEVER LOOKED IN THE YARD, DID NOT TAKE PHOTOS OF ROBBIE'S KIDS OR HOME. IT IS VILE AND DISGUSTING - AND FREAKING IMMATURE! - TO SAY OTHERWISE!!!
Rob Ford, Conrad Black and the great Rosie Dimanno
It's a type of mental illness they have. The lies. The embracing of their lies, letting those lies live. The avoiding responsibility. Many will believe these two. And some will even believe Robbie's brother Dougie when he said his little bro was not suggesting the Toronto Star reporter was a pedophile. That despite the fact that HIS WORDS COULD HAVE MEANT NOTHING ELSE.
But wait. I am not getting there. Somehow the tone, the content, is not quite capturing it all. Capturing the notion of how childish these two are. How silly. That failure in mind, let me end by providing a few well-wired together words on it all courtesy that wonderful Toronto Star columnist Rosie DiManno. She's the best.
Check this out from her column today:
For this particular bundle of tripe from our crack-smoking, gang-slumming, vulgarity-spewing chief magistrate, the enabling arrived courtesy of Conrad Black, the disgraced former global media baron whose pontifications have now nosedived from the pages of The Telegraph in London to up-dial cable channel television in Toronto.
That's awesome, Rosie. And so is this:
One has to stoop awfully low to come up with an accusation worse than crack-smoker, ass-grabber, hood-consorter mayor. RoFo leaned way down to get there. And fart-catching Black let it pass.
Outstanding. I can't say much more except that Robbie and Conrad make a great couple - of adult kids. Wow! Adult kids get TV shows and elected!! It is an odd, odd world and The Never Ending Story of Rob further suggests that it will never be anything but.
